SACRED FIRE CEREMONY CHOLQ’IJ MAYA

An evening to respectfully connect with Maya cosmology, cacao, and the ancestral tradition of the Sacred Fire.

It is an honour to welcome to Tierra Iris the Tz’utujil family of Nana Marina Cruz, daughter of Tata Pedro Cruz, together with Tata Juan Ismael K’ich’e, transmitters of Maya cosmology and guardians of the Sacred Fire tradition.

We will also be joined by Nana Maribel, spiritual guide and midwife, carrying traditional knowledge connected to women’s care.

During this gathering, cacao will be shared, inviting us to connect with this plant through its history, its nature, and the ancestral knowledge of the peoples who have cultivated and cared for it, honouring those who have carried this wisdom through generations.

The ceremony will be guided through the tradition of the Cholq’ij, the sacred Maya calendar. Fire holds a central place in this tradition: copal, flowers, seeds, cacao, and other elements of nature are offered to the fire, accompanied by words, gratitude, and prayers.

A space to listen, learn, and respectfully approach a living tradition, recognising the history, memory, and ancestral wisdom held within the fire, the cacao, and each ceremonial element.

Fire will be created through candles.
